We are in love with these sweet adorable puppies!

Ellie’s Puppies

Ellie is a devoted mother. She has such a calm, gentle, and loving disposition and all these qualities come out with the devotion she shows her 5 babies. They feed on demand, one or two at a time. I guess the puppies know that there is no competition, so they don’t have to hurry and fight their way for a spot. There is always food available.

VIDEO – New collars for Ellie’s five little puppies. The initial ribbon that we use when puppies are first born are not the best as they don’t stay on the puppies for very long. My husband Tom and son Robbie made collars out of parachute cord for Ruska’s 11 puppies and I was waiting on them to make some for Ellie’s litter too. I finally decided to give it a try for myself. I watched a YouTube instructional video (many times) and it wasn’t as easy as I thought. After a few tries though, I got the hang of it. Now you can identify who is who in the pics and videos.

Ruska’s Puppies

Ruska continues to watch over and care for her puppies but, is now more comfortable to leave them for a more extended period of time. She loves her puppies and never tires of caring for them. They still sleep most of the time and wake only to eat. When Ruska comes back to the whelping box, they get so excited to see their mama!

Take a Look at Ellie’s Sweet, Beautiful Fur Babies

I called on my daughter in law again, to take singles of Ellie and Brinkley’s puppies. It is not easy to keep these little ones still. She did an amazing job, thanks again Eryn!

Ellies puppies were born much bigger than Ruska’s puppies. One reason is because she had only 5 puppies in the litter compared to Ruska’s 11. Ellie is such an amazing mama. She is so attentive and doesn’t want to leave their box. I had to drag her out so that she could have a bathroom break and get some exercise in the yard. The puppies are packing on the weight too. I’m thinking they will have doubled their birth weight before day 10. Good job Ellie!

Hooray! Ruska’s Adorable Puppies Are Now Two Week Old!

LOOKING BACK

Another week older – Ruska’s puppies are now 2 weeks old. We have had an busy week! I have been spending a lot of my time beside Ruska at feeding time. She likes me to keep her company and I like to make sure everyone gets a chance to nurse. With such a big litter it took a little longer but, all of our puppies have now doubled their birth weight. They all continue to gain weight daily. All our puppies are doing well!

It is such an exciting time to see the puppies eyes beginning to open. Their vision is not well developed just yet but it will improve over the coming weeks. Puppies are gaining strength in the hind legs and are moving around the whelping box much faster. Ruska continues to be a loving and attentive mama.

LOOKING AHEAD TO WEEK THREE

  • Puppies will still eat and sleep most of their day
  • Puppies will continue growing
  • Eyes will continue to open wider and their sight will become clearer
  • Ears will start to open and they will begin to hear (though not well yet)
  • Puppies hind legs will become stronger as they practice walking on all fours
  • Puppies will become more aware of their surroundings and begin to interact with each other

What will my puppy’s coat look like? Coat Comparisons

(Post updated 2023)

I have had many inquires from families wondering what coat type the puppies will have as they mature. When dealing with a Hybrid it is very difficult to predict with certainty what their Adult coat will eventuality end up like. Puppies go through multiple coat changes before their adult coat finally comes in. All newborn goldendoodle puppies look like Golden Retrievers. It is not until around 6 – 7 weeks when we can determine if it will be a Flat Coat goldendoodle – no facial furnishings. We have produced flat coats with both straight hair and with some curls. We have also produced Wavy/Shaggy coat goldendoodles and Curly Coat goldendoodles.

Below are some of our previous puppies. There are three pictures of each puppy. Notice the progression of the puppy: the first picture is newborn, the next picture is puppy at eight weeks old and the last picture the puppy as an adult.

My puppies are lucky to have joined such wonderful, loving families. It makes my day when I get an email from one of our previous puppy families giving me an update and sharing pics of their dog. Thank you!

TEDDY BEAR GOLDENDOODLES

Teddy Bear Goldendoodles look just like their name suggests, a Teddy Bear. They are fluffy all over including the face. They come in three types – Straight, Wavy, and Curly. Grooming requirements are brushing daily to prevent matting and a trip to the groomers every eight weeks or so.

Curly Coat Goldendoodle

Venus (Purple Collar Girl) – Curly Coat

Joey (Dark Blue Collar Boy) – Curly Coat

Harley (Grey Collar Boy) – Curly Coat

Wavy Coat Goldendoodles

Shelby(Yellow Collar Girl) – Wavy Coat

Skylo (White Collar Boy) – WavyCoat

Lennon (Azure Collar Girl) – Wavy Coat

Fluffy (Khaki Collar Girl) – Wavy Coat

Donny (Red Collar Boy) – Straight Coat

Milo (Orange Collar Boy) – Straight Coat

FLAT COAT GOLDENDOODLES

Flat Coat Goldendoodles look much like a Golden Retriever with an open face. Just like the Teddy Bear Goldendoodles, their coats can be straight, wavy, or curly. There are less grooming requirements for Flat Coat Goldendoodles – No trip to the groomer as they do not require a haircut. Brushing, deshedding and bathing as required to help reduce shedding.

TeeJay (Green CollarGirl) – Flat Coat – Straight

Molly (Yellow Collar Girl) – Flat Coat – Wavy

Eating + Sleeping = Growing

Ellie’s new puppies having their breakfast. As we have mentioned, newborn puppies spend 90% of their time eating and sleeping during the first 2 weeks of their life.

Ellie’s Puppies Returning To Their Clean Whelping Box

We have a daily morning routine. After puppies have had their breakfast it is time for “Weigh In”. We weight each puppy daily and record their weight in the log. This helps us track each puppy’s growth. Healthy puppies should gain weight every day. At this time, we also check their collars and adjust any that have become snug. Puppies grow so fast, so it is important to check them a few times a day. Then we clean and disinfect their whelping box. Finally, we line the bottom of the Whelping box with a clean “Vet Bed”, a product that resembles sheepskin. I love this man-made product because it is easy to clean and keeps the puppies dry, warm, comfortable and provides good traction. A puppy moves forward by pushing backwards. When a newborn puppy is placed on a surface with inadequate traction, its feet can slide right out from under it and may cause the legs to extend and adduct. By providing great traction when the puppies are moving around and learning to walk it helps to reduce the stress on their growing joints.

Time To Sleep

Ruska’s puppies looking for a comfy spot to sleep. Newborn puppies huddle together to keep warm. As the days pass, they spread out more and look for a buddy or two to sleep with.

Dark Blue Boy, Look At Those Beautiful Eyes!

It is such an exciting time….Ruska’s puppies eye’s are beginning to open. Puppies are born with their eyes and ears sealed shut. Between 12 to 14 days, their eyes begin to open. Now the puppies will have a new world to explore and their learning begins!

It is with great excitement we announce “The Puppies Have Arrived!”

We are pleased to announce that Ellie and Brinkley’s puppies have arrived. They welcomed a litter of 5 puppies – 3 boys and 2 Girls on Saturday August 8, 2020. Unlike Ruska, she didn’t make us wait. Her puppies arrived before “The Big Day” countdown for her due date hit “0” LOL.

Ellie, a first time mom, did an amazing job! It’s hard work whelping, even more so for Ellie as the puppies were a good size. We stayed right beside Ellie and the new puppies for the first twenty-four hours to make sure things were going smoothly. Now it is Ellie’s turn and her “round the clock job” has begun. She will spend her days and nights cleaning, feeding and keeping her puppies warm .

Day 10 – Is a Puppy Milestone Weight Check

Gold camo boy

The puppies are now 10 days old. This is the day we do a “milestone weight gain evaluation”. Ideally puppies should double their birth weight at the 10-day point. We had one puppy reach this milestone at nine days. Two more puppies achieved this goal today.

Previously with a large litter (more than 8), I have notice it takes a day or two extra to reach this milestone of doubling their birth weight. All of our puppies have been gaining weight daily and are progressing well to achieve this goal in the next couple days.

Ruska has the ability to feed eight puppies at the same time, leaving three puppies “waiting their turn”. During the day at feeding time, I have been rotating the six larger puppies through this “waiting” by putting them in a “waiting box”in the whelping area – three on one feeding, the other three on the next feeding. This was easily done when they were first born but now that they have become more mobile, they have less patients to wait their turn and climb out of the “waiting box” trying to sneak in for a snack! So, I have had to remove them from the whelping box all together and contained them in a larger “Waiting Box” until it is their turn to nurse.

VIDEO: Puppies are now moving faster to nurse. You may have noticed the puppies are wearing different ID collars. We were having trouble with the ribbons, so I welcomed the help of my son Robbie and my husband Tom who made the new collars out of parachute cord. Michaels, where we purchased the cord, had limited colour choice so, a few of the puppy’s collar colours have been substituted: Light Pink girl now has a Pink Camo collar, Brown girl now has a Brown Camo collar and Gold boy now has a Gold Camo collar.

ELLIE’s puppies ………. the countdown is on

Ellie has about one week until her puppies arrive. She is still eating well, slowed down and is getting lots of rest. I can hear lots of baby heartbeats but cannot determine how many because they are so close together. She has been so interested in Ruska’s puppies and a few days ago Ruska was finally willing to let her see them.

It is now time to prepare for her whelping. Ellie went to the groomers yesterday for a trim and tummy shave. The clean tummy makes it easier for the puppies when they nurse. We now have her whelping box set up so she can spend time getting comfortable in it, and everything else prepared waiting for the babies to arrive..

Ellie checking out her whelping box

Even though this will be her first litter, I know she will be a great mama. She even has experience caring for puppies from Ruska’s last litter in a “nanny role”. Ellie is such a loving dog and always keeps me company. She always wants to be by my side.

ONE WEEK OLD

AUGUST 5TH, 2020 – DAY 7 – 1 WEEK OLD

1 week old

Wow, 7 days have past so quickly and our babies are already one week old! For the first few weeks of life, a puppy cannot regulate their own body temperature. They need a warm space, their mother and littermates to help keep them warm. Puppies are born with their eyes and ears sealed shut; they cannot see or hear. They have to rely on “smell” and “touch” to find their mother.

Ruska is a great mom. For the first few days of the puppies lives she spent all her time in the whelping box with the them, keeping them warm, clean and making sure they nursed often. For the last few days she has been spending some time away from them but still runs upstairs regularly to check on them. The puppies have become experts at nursing; they can smell when Ruska returns to the whelping box. They wake and make a mad dash to find her and begin their next meal.

LOOKING AHEAD TO WEEK TWO

  • Much the same as week one – Eat, Sleep, Repeat!
  • Puppies will continue growing and should double their birth weight at around 10 days
  • Puppies still crawl; hind legs will become stronger
  • Eyes should begin to open towards the end the 2nd week – so exciting !!!

Day 6

(Some content may be missing – to view full post go to the website)

During the first few days of the puppies lives, Ruska would only leave them for bathroom breaks. She would run the perimeter of our yard and then, right back to her puppies.. Ruska like most mothers is very protective of her babies. Our other dogs would wait outside our bedroom to see the puppies, Ruska would give them a quick peak and then made sure they knew who was in charge!

Our other dogs waiting outside the door

Over the last couple days we have fallen into a routine. The puppies are now getting the regular milk and are satisfied for a longer time in-between feedings. Ruska has an around the clock job feeding and cleaning. Newborn puppies spend the first two weeks of life eating, getting cleaned by their mama, and sleeping.

Always hungry puppies

When it comes to matters of the potty, puppies need their mothers help at first. For the first few weeks newborn puppies do not instinctively know how to nor do they possess the ability to eliminate themselves without their mother cleaning them.
Puppies sleeping,
Watch closely and you can see the puppies “twitch”.
Twitching in puppies has a very important function and is a sign of healthy development. It is believed that twitching actually helps the puppy develop strong muscles.
